Empow(HER): A Her Story of Success Playlist

At Her Story of Success, we love sharing messages of empowerment and creating inspiring content for the women in our community. So when we realized that music is a huge source of inspiration for our team, we decided to start sharing some of our favorites with all of you!

Today, we’re highlighting a few of the songs our team members have been loving lately, but we’re also launching a new Spotify account! You can find a playlist of the songs in this post — and add some of your own favorites — here, but we’re also going to be adding new playlists regularly, so be sure to follow us to stay up-to-date!

“Firewalker” by Shannon LaBrie

“Firewalker” is about rising up to the challenges that come in your life and learning to walk through them in confidence. This powerful song from Nashville-based Americana songwriter Shannon LaBrie is a favorite of our CEO and Chief Empower-Her Leah Glover Hayes, and it’s an anthem for anyone who’s going through a hard time and needs a reminder of her own power.

“Golden Hour” by Kacey Musgraves

This sweet love song is just one of the Kacey Musgraves songs we’ve been enjoying lately. It’s the perfect chill music and a great reminder to appreciate your loved ones. Leah has been loving listening to this song with her husband when they’re unwinding after a long day or week.

“Slow Burn” by Kacey Musgraves

For Chief Operating Officer Melissa Aldridge, “Slow Burn” is a reminder to take it easy, both during this time of social distancing and throughout life as a whole.

“Rise Up” by Andra Day

This R&B anthem is such an inspirational reminder to keep having hope and leaning on each other for empowerment, which is something we all need more than ever these days. Research Assistant Jessica Kaplan loves listening to this song when she needs to get into a mood where she knows she can accomplish anything.

“Dark Side” by Kelly Clarkson

If these past couple of months have shown us anything, it’s that we’re all in this together, for better or worse. We need empathy more than ever these days, and that’s what this song is all about. It’s a great reminder to be understanding and view others in a positive light.

“everything i wanted” by Billie Eilish

For Marketing Manager Halee Sprinkle, this song has been more relatable than ever while she’s working from home during COVID-19. “I thought for the longest time I wanted to be a stay-at-home mom and have more time with my son. With all of this extra time at home, I realized how much I thrive with adult interaction and time alone to focus,” she shared.

Radio Disney

Halee also suggests Radio Disney as a great alternative to your typical music that may not always be appropriate for young kids. This kid-friendly station has plenty of music you’ll enjoy, too!

“Like A Girl” by Lizzo

The phrase “like a girl” has been used as an insult for so long, and Lizzo turns that around with this inspiring rap. It’s a great song for dancing, working out or just generally getting pumped up!

“Armor” by Sara Bareilles

This song is a favorite for Podcast Executive Producer Claire Bidigare-Curtis, and it’s such an empowering reminder to turn painful experiences into your source of strength. “The lyrics of this song are so badass. It’s all about how together, women have armor against all of the interwoven and institutionalized sexism,” Claire explained.

“Long Live” by Taylor Swift

An oldie but a goodie, this song is a favorite for a couple of members of our team. Public Relations Specialist Kylie Hubbard put it best when she said, “It helps me remember the good times. And it’s a nice break from the ‘girls only sing about boys’ mantra that existed for a while.”

“How Far I’ll Go” from Moana

Kylie has been loving this song because it taps into her inner child who still loves Disney movies (who doesn’t?), but she also finds it empowering as a recent college graduate who’s just getting started in her career. It’s a great reminder to dream big and trust that you’ll go places you can’t even imagine yet!

“Expectations” by Katie Pruitt

In a season where none of us can really know what to expect from the future, this song inspires us to focus on finding joy in the things that make us feel most alive, even when the rest of the world is confusing or frightening. It’s also a great song to blast with the windows down on a sunny day (once we’re all able to safely go out in public again, of course).

“Back in My Body” by Maggie Rogers

This song has been an anthem for me (Bronte) for the past year, reminding me to keep fighting to prioritize my mental health and take care of myself. It means even more to me now with all the challenges my city has faced in the past few months. As important as it is to serve others, I also need to prioritize my own well-being.

“Man! I Feel Like A Woman” by Shania Twain

This song is the ultimate girl anthem. It’s so empowering and uplifting, and it’s a favorite of our Communications Intern, Mary Cate Varga!

“Fight Song” by Rachel Platten

Mary Cate also finds a ton of motivation and encouragement from this hit by Rachel Platten. It reminds her that women are powerful and strong.

We’ve created a playlist of all the songs in this post, but we also want to hear from you! The playlist is collaborative, so you can add your favorite empowering jams from women artists. Let’s inspire each other!
